Pia has been involved in the project to provide alternative formats of the national curriculum tests to schools in England for many years. Over these years, much good practice and useful information has passed under our nose and yet has never been collected and published. So, the idea of this practical guide was formed between colleagues one day on a long train journey. Over the next 2 years, Pia gathered together some very willing qualified teachers of visual impairment, commissioned, collected and edited their contributions, and then put it all together with a fantastic CD ROM of 'pick up and use' resources.ContentsThe book is in 2 main sections. The first section covers general information about the inclusion of pupils with visual impairment in a mainstream school. Topics covered in this section include Individual Education Plans, the school environment, trips and visits, mobility and orientation and assessment. The second section is a detailed look at teaching curriculum subjects to pupils with visual impairment. There's a chapter on most curriculum subjects, including the core subjects of literacy, mathematics and science, and other subjects such as history, geography, physical education, art and music. A review in the April 2008 issue of RNIB's Insight magazine called this book an "excellent practical resource" and "an essential guide for new and experienced support assistants and teachers working with a child who has sight problems". Resources CD ROMThe book also contains a fantastic resources CD ROM for use in schools. We put together a range of ready-made PDF templates ready to print and use in classrooms in a range of formats. But for those pupils who have more specific needs, each template is also provided in a Word format, allowing schools to edit the resource to match the needs of each individual pupil. But, that's not all! The CD ROM also contains a range of examples of modifying learning materials. In each example, the original question is shown, then we show how the same question might be presented in an accessible format, and finally each example also has a list of the principles behind the modification. This means that you learn from the examples on the CD ROM and apply the principles to modifying your own learning materials.
